In 1827 Karl Baedeker (1801 Essen/1859 Koblenz) opened his bookstore, which at the time was in Paradeplatz in Koblenz. It was during this year that he released his book, "Rhine Journey from Mainz to Cologne", the foundation which has become the well-known travel guides of today and his fame associated with it. In Koblenz Baedeker met painter Johann Heinrich Richter, who returned to settle in Koblenz in 1826 after completing his apprenticeship in Munich.

The significance of Richter being a recognized portraitist is reflected, along with others, in portraits of Prince Romanowsky, which is listed under the Lot 635.
