Notes

Waitt is known to have trained with the Edinburgh artist John Scougal, and was an accomplished painter of still lives, of which there is an example in the Scottish National Gallery. He practiced predominantly as a portraitist in the Highlands, his first recorded work dating from 1708 when he was paid for painting the arms of The Earl of Hopetoun in the church at Abercorn. Notably he was commissioned to paint portraits of members of the Clan Grant. They first employed Waitt in 1713 to paint the beginning of a clan portrait gallery at Castle Grant. These included portraits of the laird's tenants in chief and the heads of those families who had pledged their loyalty to Alexander Grant (d.1719).

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
