Item Overview

Description

RICHARD GORDON STOUT (American, b. 1934) Ephemeral Nude with Demons, 1957 Oil on canvas 48 x 25 inches (121.9 x 63.5 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Stout / 1-57 Signed and dated verso: Richard Stout / 1957 Richard Stout was born in Beaumont, Texas. He obtained his BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA at the University of Texas at Austin. He was also an art professor at the University of Houston from 1975-1995. While he was best known for his abstract work, this haunting painting reflects his style applied to an ephemeral human figure. Stout often created abstract paintings where the central shape was smudged in one direction as if he had used something to drag the paint across the surface, creating a similar effect.
