Description

After the Blitz; St Paul's from Newgate Street signed 'R.G. Mathews' (lower right) and inscribed and dated 'St Pauls from Newgate Street. January 5-7th.1941' (lower left) pencil, chalk and watercolour 13 x 161/4 in. (33 x 41.3 cm.) and similar and two other views of London by the same artist; the view looking north west from Fore Street and a view of a war-damaged building. (3) NOTES Despite being a particularly vulnerable target, St Paul's Cathedral was remarkably unharmed during the aerial bombardment of the Second World War.
