Description

Richard Garbe (1876-1957) 'PROSER-PINE' A sculpture in ivory depicting a woman in a flowing robe standing beside a shrub, mounted on a hardwood base, inscribed, signed and dated 1936, 25.5cm high overall Richard Garbe trained under his father in metal and ivory and then at the Central School of Arts (where he later taught sculpture) and the Royal Acadamy. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1908 and became an Academician in 1936. His peak output was in the 1920s and 30s with this piece typical of his work in this period. Several of his pieces were reproduced by Royal Doulton. His architectural work includes work for the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff and Thames House in London.
