The hippodrome de la Marche was a prestigious racecourse located just to the North of Paris.

Six of the seven jockeys in the present painting have been identified. Two of the riders, in brown jerseys and red helmets, wear the colours of the comte de Saint Sauveur, who raced horses at de la Marche from 1873 to 1882. The white shirt and pink helmet were the colours of W. Hurst; the green and black belonged to Cesare Ranucci; and the black and red belonged to J. Vanneck.

The present work will be included in the forcoming catalogue raisonné on Princeteau by Louis Cuvreau and Hubert de Watrigant.
