Read (Samuel, 1815-1883). Cathedral interior with figures celebrating Mass, watercolour, heightened with body colour, 51 x 41.5 cm (20 x 16.25 ins), framed and glazed Samuel Read, artist and illustrator, speciailsed in architectural and coastal scenes. He travelled extensively on the continent, and was the first artist to be sent to Constantinople, just prior to the Crimean War, in 1853, as a special correspondent for the Illustrated London News.
