Item Overview

Description

Raymond Jean Verdun (French, 1873-1954) "Paysage", oil on canvas, 13-1/4" x 18-1/4", signed lower right "R. Verdun", retains gallery label en verso "Kurt E. Schon Ltd., New Orleans, Louisiana". Presented in a period giltwood exhibition frame bearing brass artist plaque, first quarter 20th century. Provenance: Kurt E. Schon, Ltd., New Orleans, Louisiana. Note: Raymond Verdun was a painter of French landscapes in the Barbizon style. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Francais, winning an Honorable Mention in 1909. Verdun was a student and close friend of Henri Joseph Harpignies (French, 1819-1916) who insisted his students use the "plein air" technique of painting. Verdun's paintings vary with the moods of the day and show a vivid perception of the true coloring of the locales he chose to paint.
