Le superbe modèle de notre cartel est décrit dans l’article de Michel Leclercq « Un cartel à succès du temps de Louis XV », bulletin de l’Association Nationale des Collectionneurs et Amateurs d’Horlogerie Ancienne et d’Art, n??96, Paris, Printemps 2003, pp. 5-10. Un modèle similaire au nôtre, signé par l’horloger Pierre Leroy y est reproduit en couverture .
Notre oeuvre en bronze ciselé et doré est sommée d’une figure féminine brandissant une torche symbolisant Le Point du Jour. Elle repose sur une large volute asymétrique entourée de nuées. Le cadran circulaire est flanqué de larges volutes festonnées, dont la base laisse apparaître le balancier. À l’amortissement, deux angelots semblent soutenir le cartel en émergeant de nuées. La thématique abordée renforce le sentiment que ce cartel, destiné à être accroché sur un mur, est suspendu dans les airs et le ciel.
Le modèle de notre cartel fut exécuté en 1728 par le Marquis Henri-Camille de Beringhem (1693-1770), premier écuyer du Roi. Il le destinait au chevet du lit de Louis XV à Versailles. Pour mener à bien son projet, il réclama les services du bronzier Nicolas Le Sueur pour la caisse et du célèbre horloger Julien II Le Roy pour le mouvement à répétition par tirage. Notons que ce dernier avait pour habitude de choisir librement ses caisses, sauf comme dans le cas présent, où le client impose son goût. Leroy apprécia les dessins de Beringhem car il écrivit à ce propos : « il a si bien réussi qu’elle a été généralement approuvé et admirée tant par les connaisseurs que les gens de bon goût ».
Le cartel réalisé pour le Roi fut terminé en 1734 et devant son succès, Le Sueur en
réalisa d’autres notamment pour Monsieur Bonnier de la Mosson, grand amateur d’art à
cette époque. Ils peuvent être agrémentés de mouvements d’horlogerie signés Etienne Le
Lenoir, Julien Le Roy ou encore Bastien dont notre œuvre est le seul exemplaire connu de
cet horloger. Le Musée Carnavalet en possède un modèle identique au nôtre présentant une
alternance de bronzes ciselés et dorés .

The sale will be conducted in Euros (e).
Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to e 500 000:
25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to e 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted. Exhibitions prior to the sale at Marc-Arthur Kohn or on the sale point permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale, and therefore no claims will be accepted after the fall of the hammer. Pictures may differ from actual product.

BIDS
Biddings will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue or as announced by the auctioneer, and will be in increments determined by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser. Should the auctioneer recognize two simultaneous bids on
an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the sale room may participate in this second opportunity to bid.

ABSENTEE BIDS AND TELEPHONE BIDS
If you wish to make a bid in writing or a telephone bid, we have to receive no later than two days before the sale your instructions accompanied by your bank references. In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence. Telephone bids are a free service designed for
