The interior of a cobbler's workshop, with a cobbler at work and a woman peeling onions signed with initials 'QB' (strengthened?, lower left) oil on panel 43.2 x 59.8 cm. PROVENANCE (Possibly) Seger Tierens; sale, The Hague, 23 July 1743, lot 221. (Possibly) Anon. Sale, P. van der Schley, etc., Amsterdam, 5 December 1785, lot 21 (fl. 10 to Touquet). Anon. Sale, Lepke, Berlin, 4 June 1912, lot 54. Anon. Sale, Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, 25 November 1913, lot 237. Anon. Sale, Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, 5 June 1917, lot 1. LITERATURE (Possibly) G. Hoet, Catalogus of naamlijst van schilders met derzelven prijzen, etc., 1752, II, p. 96, fig. 221. A. Lasius, Quiringh van Brekelenkam, 1992, p. 91, no. 39, where dated to circa 1660. NOTES A. Lasius, op. cit., dates the present lot to circa 1660. She points out that a comparable interior is to be found in the picture, signed and dated 1653, that was with Slatter, London, in circa 1944-5 ( ibid., pp. 89-90, no. 33).
