Item Overview

Description

QUIRIJN MAURITS VER HUELL (1787-1860)
Gezigten in Oost-Indië. [Rotterdam: Arbon and Krap, 1824].

2° (305 x 404mm). 4 lithographic plates, unnumbered, titled, captioned in Dutch and French, 3 with imprints: Java, Celebes (2) and Banda. In card window-mounts. Green cloth fold-down box.
8° (225 x 150mm). 8 leaves descriptive text, in Dutch and French for each plate, without title or imprint. Uncut, modern marbled wrappers.

EXCEPTIONALLY RARE COMPLETE SUITE of the first lithographic views of Indonesia, printed in Brussels by J.B.A.M. Jobard from drawings by Ver Huell, naval officer in Indonesia 1816-1819 and one of the most important botanical draughtsmen of the 19th century. Ver Huell envisioned a more extensive work but it was never completed by Jobard in Brussels or the publishers in Rotterdam. Only these four plates were issued, originally with a lithographic title-page wrapper, not present here. Their rarity is attested to by the fact that only the Maritime Museum, Rotterdam, has a complete suite, the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, having but three of the plates. Although Jobard established the first lithographic workshop in the Netherlands, probably in association with Carl Senefelder, his business was short lived and closed in 1830. His plates for Gezigten were later re-issued with Ver Heull's expanded, 2 volume work on his travels, Herinneringen van een Reis naar de Oost-Indien, Haarlem, 1835-1836. Haks and Maris 275-276; Bastin and Brommer p.10, notes 148, 153, 161.
