The sitter was the daughter of Landgrave Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt and married the future King Frederick William II of Prussia in 1769, as his second wife. A similar miniature of her is illustrated in G. Biermann/Brinckmann, Die Miniaturensammlung Seiner Königlichen Hoheit des Grossherzogs Ernst Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein , Leipzig, 1917, pl. 75, no. 238.
