Description

TRAVELLING DOWN THE QUTANG GORGE Handscroll, ink and colour on paper 46.8 x 1227.8 cm. (18 3/8 x 483 in.) Entitled and signed: Shubao Qian Gu Two seals of the artist: Gu, Shu Bao Dated dingchou year (1577) Inscription states that Qian Gu painted this, adopting the style of Wang Meng (1308-1385), to record his journey travelling down the Qutang Gorge One collector's seal of Hu Xiao[ CMM](date?) on the mounting: Fu Shan Hu Shi Kao Cang Inscriptions at the end of the scroll by each of: Fei Erqi (17th-18th century), signed with two seals; Zhang Zhao (1691-1745), dated third month, gengshen year of the Qianlong era (1740), signed with two seals; and Yong Xing (Prince Cheng, 1752-1841), dated fourth month, guiyou year (1813), signed with two seals Two collectors' seals at the end of the scroll by each of: Tie Bao (1752-1824): Tie Bao Si Yin; and Li Enqing (19th century): Bei Ping Li Shi Ji Yun Zhen Cang Tu Shu Frontispiece by Yong Xing, dated fourth month, guiyou year of the Qianlong era (1813), signed with two seals One collector's seal of Chong An (19th century) on the frontispiece NOTES (US$83,900-109,700) NOTE: For brief biographies of Fei Erqi, see Zhongguo Meishujia Renming Cidian, Shanghai Renmin Meishu Chubanshe, 1981, p.1113; Liu Jiu'an, Song Yuan Ming Qing Shuhuajia Zhuanshi Zuoping Nianbiao (A Chronology of Paintings from the Song to the Qing), Shanghai Shuhua Chubanshe, 1997, p.475.
