Notes

Born in Israel in 1966, Ya'ari received his BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and his MPhil from Derby University, UK. Exhibiting regularly in Israel and abroad Ya'ari is represented by Sommer Gallery in Tel Aviv, Lisson Gallery, London and Lombard/Fried Fine Art, New York.

Ya'ari photographs of what appear to be ordinary scenes from the Israeli countryside. Deliberately avoiding dramatic depictions of this tumultuous country, the artist chooses instead to focus on seemingly unremarkable fragments of the countryside. Despite this, a curious sense of unease fills these enigmatic landscape raising questions in the viewer's mind. Most of these images were photographed in the winter, giving the landscapes a European hue of greenness. With minimal digital intervention, his photographs are masterly composed with a painter's sensibility for framing devices, paths leading the eye into the distance and figures grouped according to compositional rules established long ago.
