Notes

Born in a displaced persons camp in Austria in 1948, Hershberg arrived in Israel in 1949. In 1958 he emigrated with his parents to the United States. He studied at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn and at the State University of New York at Albany . Currently he resides in Jerusalem.
Doreet LeVitté Harten discusses Hershberg's works as follows: "Hershberg handles the objects and scenes he paints with absolute faithfulness. He takes a long time, sometimes up to a year, to finish a work, and, if one is not careful enough, the result could be categorized as realistic painting. But Hershberg is not a realistic painter; neither does he stress realism to the point of a hyper-resemblance or a surrealistic extravaganza. He is well aware of the fact that today no object stands on its own merits or truth; interpretation exists before the subject has been depicted. However, there is a thin line between interpretation and the object's reality which seems to interest him most. That is the point where reality, i.e. the object, becomes its own metaphor." (Doreet LeVitté Harten in Israeli Art around 1990: BiNationale, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and the Artist's House, Moscow, 1990, p. 150)
