PROVENANCE:
Charles Knox Smith, Philadelphia.

Born in Antwerp in 1845, Evariste Carpentier received his artistic training at L'Academie de l'Anvers. After leaving the academy in Antwerp, the young artist dedicated himself to history painting which formed the basis of his artistic career.

Carpentier was a truly international artist and was recognized and admired in Amsterdam, Paris, Nice, Berlin, Barcelona and even in the United States. The artist moved to La Hulpe in the Brabant and his art demonstrates his seduction by the landscape and the clear light of the Flemish countryside. Although Carpentier's art defies categorization, he was clearly influenced by the Impressionists in both his brushstroke and his adept handling of the effect of light.
