Depicted after the temptation with Eve still holding the apple, and languishing across Adam's knee, he grieving the fate of humanity with his head in hands, signed J. Jaquet, raised on a separate giltwood plinth.

Jacquet was a pupil of Louis Jéhotte at the Académie de Bruxelles, and debuted at the Salon de Bruxelles in 1842. His many public commissions include statue of La Reine Louise-Marie at Phillipeville. Jacquet became professor of sculpture at the Académie des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles in 1863.
