CATALOGUE NOTE

According to a note on the old mount, Dr. Werner Schade first suggested that this drawing might be from the circle of Bocksberger, rather than an Italian drawing as had previously been thought. Comparison with a drawing formerly in the Meissner Collection, in which many telling details of the handling are closely comparable to the present drawing, suggests that the latter can in fact be convincingly attributed to Melchior Bocksberger himself (see H. Geissler, Zeichnung in Deutschland...1540-1640, exhibition catalogue, Stuttgart 1979-80, vol. 1, pp. 128-9, cat. no. D1).

Though his life was not a particularly long one, Bocksberger had several notable pupils, including Christoph Schwarz and Georg Pecham, and he received numerous major noble and civic commissions for decorative paintings, in Munich, Regensburg and elsewhere.
