PROVENANCE

In the family of the present owner since at least circa 1950.
CATALOGUE NOTE

Van der Mij's meticulously-detailed portraits of Dutch gentry, generally on a small scale, placed him among the Leidse Fijnschilders (literally the 'Leiden Fine-painters'), of which his teacher, Willem van Mieris, was a chief exponent. A comparable picture by Van der Mij, A Portrait of Claudine van Royen in a landscape, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. C1526).
