CATALOGUE NOTE

The inscription on the reverse of La Bella Andaluza suggests that the picture was owned by Ottoline Morrell who has been called 'Bloomsbury's official hostess'. She had a house at 44 Bedford Square and was an early patron of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, as well as considerably increasing the clientele of Roger Fry's Bloomsbury Workshops. However, in comparison to many within the Bloomsbury set she stood out as an individual - being particularly wealthy and gregarious and also aristocratic. Her personal creativity lay in bringing people together (as she knew 'everyone') and acting as a catalyst for the talents of others.
