CATALOGUE NOTE

The European success of Czachorski's work resulted from the universality of his subjects and his excellent workmanship. Alongside Jozef Brandt and Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski (see lots 45, 46 & 47) he was the most acknowledged and popular representative of the Polish artistic colony in Munich at the turn of the nineteenth century. He became a master at depicting stylised intimate drawing-room scenes in which his beautiful heroines awaited their darlings, absorbed in love letters, contemplating the beauty of jewels or flowers, or looking out of windows pensively. Within these compositions Czachorski paid particular attention to the depiction of rich fabrics, such as tapestries, carpets, curtains, and the silk or velvety shimmer of his sitters dresses.

Painted in 1873, the present work predates a larger composition featuring the same sitter in a similar pose entitled Czy chcesz róze?, now in the collection of the Lwowska Galeria Sztuki, by six years. For an illustration of the latter work see Jerzy Malinowski, Malarstwo polskie XIX wieku, Warsaw, 2003, p. 206, no. 12, illustrated in black and white.
