Item Overview

Description

Toe Point Signed, inscribed and dated 'Edition 5/5 P. Das Gupta 1950' Bronze 121/2 in. (31.8 cm.) high LITERATURE Prodosh Das Gupta, 'The Calcutta Group - Its Aims and Achievements', Lalit Kala Contemporary 31, New Delhi, 1982. NOTES 'Prodosh distorted figures and made them massive and voluminous, giving [them] a clear and strong three-dimensional identity. In the late 1940's he entered a new phase with the concept of 'organism' and distinguished himself as an original sculptor. The traditional way of clay modeling was revived but skilfully amended to suit modern expression. The figures are rendered emphasizing the rhythm of volume rather than following the realistic anatomy of the human body. The forms are accentuated by pushing forces and finds antecedents in Indian traditional sculpture.' (J.J. Narzary, 'Modern Indian Sculpture: A Brief History', Lalit Kala Contemporary 41, New Delhi, 1986, p.10.).
