Notes

"An extraordinary map by a master cartographer" (Graff).

Georg Karl Ludwig Preuss (1803-1854) was a surveyor and cartographer who accompanied John C. Frémont on his first expedition to survey the American west. His overland guide map, not to be confused with those found in Frémont's published reports, records daily stopping places along with notes on the topography, water, wood, fauna, Indians, and other subjects the traveller would require. Each map has its own title and maps 2–7 have extracts from Frémont's report on that region.
