Notes

The eldest son of Louis-François Bertin, known as Bertin the Elder, the painter Edouard Bertin (1797 - 1871) was a pupil of Bidauld, Ingres and Girodet. A painter of lively landscapes and religious compositions, he exhibited at the Salon from 1827 to 1853. In 1854, on the death of his brother Armand, he had to take over the management of the Journal des Débats, which forced him to reduce his activity as a painter. He was the brother of Louise Bertin (1805 - 1877), a poet and musician, who lived surrounded by artists and was a close friend of Victor Hugo, with whom she exchanged an abundant correspondence. Girodet, one of Edouard Bertin's three masters, drew a portrait of his pupil at the age of 24 (Musée du Louvre, Paris).
