Walter Herbert Wheeler (British, 1868-1960), titled Flying Ebony on verso, signed and dated 1928 l.r.; 14.5 x 19.25 in.

Flying Ebony (foaled 1922) was an American thoroughbred who won the 1925 Kentucky Derby. Bred in Kentucky by John Madden, he was raced by New York carpet manufacturer, Gifford A. Cochran. He raced three more times after the Derby and was eventually sold to Californian Charles Elliot Perkins who stood him at his stud at his Alisal Ranch near Santa Barbara.
