Notes

The sitter was bishop of Nancy before emigrating to Vienna during the Revolution and returned to France only after the fall of Napoleon. He was made archbishop of Sens in 1817 and created cardinal in 1823. He gave a long address on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles X in the Reims cathedral on 29 May 1825. This is a study for Chazal's engraving.
