Item Overview

Description

NIKOLAI VASILIEVICH HARITONOFF (Russian/American, 1880-1944) Portrait of a Young Woman in Traditional Dress Oil on canvas 19-1/2 x 11 inches (49.5 x 27.9 cm) Signed in pencil verso: Nicholas Haritonoff Haritonoff arrived in St. Petersburg at the age of 12 from the country and earned a meager living working in shops. In 1895, he became a novice at Valaam and painted icons there for two years. Upon his return to St. Petersburg he attended the Imperial Academy, and in 1909 was awarded the title of 'Artist' for his painting Icarus. This allowed him to exhibit with some success until the outbreak of the First World War, when he was mobilized to the front. In the 1920s he immigrated to New York and became an American citizen. Like many who reached their artistic maturity on the eve of the First World War, the life and work of this talented emigré painter are still little-studied and await a researcher.
