Notes

Charles, 1st Marquess of Ailesbury, embarked on the Grand Tour in 1790, aged sixteen. There, he fell in love with and married Henrietta Hill, the daughter of Noel Hill, Lord Berwick (1745-1789). While on honeymoon in Florence in 1793, husband and wife sat for Louis Gauffier and the resulting portrait of the Marquess is the prototype for the present work. The original was sold at Sotheby's in 1966, alongside the pendant portrait of the Marchioness, and is currently in a private collection.
