Item Overview

Description

Christian Leberecht Vogel (Dresden 1759-1816)
Portrait of a boy, traditionally identified as Moritz Schultze (1791-1854), bust-length, in a brown coat, in a feigned oval
oil on canvas laid on board
22½ x 18 in. (57.2 x 45.8 cm.)

Provenance

Moritz Schultze, Dresden (according to a label on the reverse).

Notes

Vogel studied with Johann Eleazar Schenau (1737-1806) in Dresden and at the Dresden Akademie. From 1780 he worked for the Saxon nobility in the Muldenland where he was renowned for his sentimental portraits of children which seem to anticipate the intimacy of Biedermeier art.
