Item Overview

Description

Red chalk. 102 by 71 mm. Provenance: Jonathan Richardson, Jnr. (L.2170); E. Drury Lowe Collection, Locko Park. The attribution to Polidoro was first proposed by Philip Pouncey. Pierluigi Leone de Castris has suggested that the drawing probably dates from the period when the artist was working in Messina, and may be preparatory for one of the various lost altarpieces of the Madonna and Child which he is known to have painted for churches in that city.
