N. A. Mukhanov was educated at home before entering into the service of the Leib Guards Izmailovsky Regiment in 1819. The following year he joined the Orenburgsky Uhlan Regiment as a cornet before being transferred to the Leib Guards Hussar Regiment where he became aide-de-camp and subsequently lieutenant in 1826. He was decorated for his part in the Russo-Turkish war before commencing work at the Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1832. In 1866 Mukhanov became a full privy councillor, a member of the state council, senator and honourable trustee. This portrait was painted in St Petersburg and can be dated to the end of 1827/the first half of 1828.
