Pio Fedi attended the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and studied under the famous Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. He spent time in Vienna and Rome, where he worked in Pietro Tenerani's workshop (see lot 136) and executed a Cleopatra morente (1842) and a Buon cacciatore (1843). He returned to Florence around 1844 where he received a number of prominent commissions for public monuments as well as neo-classical and genre works for private patrons.
