Description

PINE, John (1690-1756). The Procession and Ceremonies observed at the Time of the Installation of the Knights Companions of the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath. London: Printed S. Palmer and J. Huggonson for John Pine, 1730. 2° (505 x 377mm). Titles in French and English printed in red and black, each with an engraved vignette, parallel text in French and English, list of subscribers. 20 engraved plates, all but one double-page, 10 engraved head- and tail-pieces by Pine after J. Highmore. (Text leaved mounted on guards.) Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked preserving original spine, spine worn). Provenance: Foley (armorial bookplate with motto "ut prosim").

In 1725 John Pine asked Joseph Highmore to make 20 drawings for engravings of The Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath. The formal ceremony celebrating the installation of knights conferred by the King was held at Westminster Abbey on 17 June 1725. The text of this work, written by John Anstis, describes the procession to the chapel by the knights, the ceremony at the chapel, and the banquet served after the ceremonies. The plates illustrate the participants of the procession, the attire of the knights, and the seating chart and "plan of the entertainment" at the supper. Brunet III, p. 750; Graesse V, p.298.
