Notes

Pieter Cornelisz. was the son of the marine painter Cornelis Verbeeck. He became a master of the guild of Alkmaar in 1635, and ten years later joined the guild of St. Luke in Haarlem, where he is thought to have taught Philips Wouwermans and Gillis Schagen. Although known mainly for his depictions of horses, hunting and cavaliers, the present sheet is typical of his style. St. Peter's distinctive expression and the elaborate approach to the vegetation at his feet are both seen in prints by Verbeeck.υ1 1. See Hollstein vol. XXXV, p. 164, no. 1 and p. 166, no. 3
