Item Overview

Description

Plums and redcurrants on the branch in a basket, tulips, poppies, honeysuckle, fleurs-de-lys, bell-flowers and larkspur in a terracotta vase with a gourd, peas in the pod, a parsnip, apricots, cherries and Chinese lanterns on the branch on a stone ledge signed with monogram, dated and inscribed 'HANAV/PB 1631' (lower right) oil on copper 17 5/8 x 231/4 in. (44.8 x 59 cm.) NOTES This newly discovered picture is Binoit's last known dated work, postdating by some four years the still life of 1627 in a private collection (see P. Mitchell, European Flower Painters, London, 1973, p. 26, pl. 26). Painted three years prior to the artist's untimely death, this elaborate composition provides a fresh insight into the late work of the artist. Binoit trained in Hanau sometime after 1600 under Daniel Soreau alongside his master's twin sons Peter and Isaac Soreau and Sebastian Stoskopff. He worked in Frankfurt in the 1620s, returning to Hanau in 1627 where he was to remain until his death.
