Description

A portrait of the artist's daughter, Maria Brook Pulham (née Violet) (1794-1868), in profile to the right and seated on a stool before a chair and studying, wearing blue dress with white lace fill-in, frilled collar and a column of buttons running down her back, gold hooped earring, white stockings and black shoes, her brown hair cropped short, writing with a quill in her right hand, an open volume propped up against the back of the chair before her.
Watercolour on paper, signed on the obverse and dated P. Violet juin/ 1803, gilt wood frame, inscribed to the reverse a daughter of/ Monsieur Violet. Artist & Refugee from the French Revolution/ Painted by him 1803/ Bought from him by C. J. Beverly.
Oval, 237mm (9 5/16in) high
Provenance: Purchased from the artist by Charles James Beverly FRS (1786-1868), the sitter portrayed in lot 98.
