There are two other versions of The Countess Reading in the present sale as lots 352 and 353. According to Pierre Apraxine, the title of the Alma series 'harks back to the small Hotel de l'Alma in rue Saint-Arnound (now rue Volney) where the Countess lived from 1872 to 1878 (p. 185).'
