Vice Admiral Baron l'Hermitte (1766-1826), in military uniform, blue coat with gold-embroidered collar, gold epaulettes and buttons, white stock, wearing the French Military Order of St Louis and the Royal French Order of the Legion of Honour; cloudy sky background (artist's join)

on ivory
oval, 4 1/8 in. (105 mm.) high, gilt-metal mount with foliate stamped border in rectangular wood frame
A paper label on the reverse is inscribed with the sitter's name.
