Item Overview

Description

?La Gazette du Bon Ton? was an influential fashion, lifestyle and beauty magazine published in France from 1912 to 1914 and from 1920 to 1925. Founded by Lucien Vogel, the publication presented an elitist image to distinguish itself from larger, mainstream competitors (such as ?L'Art et la Mode? in France and ?Harper's Bazaar? in America). The magazine, published on fine, handmade paper, signed exclusive contracts with Paris' top couture houses to reproduce the designers' latest creations. ?La Gazette du Bon Ton? aimed to establish fashion as an art: for this purpose, Vogel decided to hire the most famous Art Deco artists and illustrators of the day, including George Barbier, Paul Iribe, Erté, André Edouard Marty, Thayaht, Pierre Brissaud, Georges Lepape and others. These artists, rather than simply drawing models in outfits, depicted them in various dramatic and narrative situations, achieving full-page fashion plates, hand-painted in vivid colours with the pochoir technique. The birth of ?La Gazette du Bon Ton? is a landmark in the history of fashion publishing, and it was an inspiration for the American edition of ?Vogue?. Thus, ?La Gazette du Bon Ton? is one of the most desired vintage fashion magazines for collectors. Plate n.1 from the first 1923 issue of ?La Gazette du Bon Ton?. Hand-painted lithograph print, loose, A condition. Dimensions in inches: 9.6 x 7.5''.
