34. WILLIAM PHILLIPS (1731? - 1781) British general who served as second in command to John Burgoyne. Served as commander of the Convention Army when Burgoyne was paroled and was noted for his tremendous arrogance. Scarce manuscript D.S. 1p. extreme oblong folio, Cambridge, June 19, 1770, a receipt for Provisions to be delivered to a Major Morrison, in the mount of 4453£. Folds, light foxing, otherwise very good condition. $400-600.
