Notes

The attribution to Philippe de Momper is based on the research of Dr Klaus Ertz who in 1986 ascribed a cohesive group of paintings, formerly known as the Treviso-group, to Philippe de Momper, Joos de Momper's son (see K. Ertz, Josse de Momper der Jüngere (1564-1635), Freren 1986, pp. 414-424, 452-3 and 642-3, cat. nos. A131-A136, reproduced). Depicting for the most part views in Rome and Treviso, these works must have been produced in the 1620s at the earliest, in the style of Joos de Momper (1564-1638) and by an artist who had been to Italy. Philippe, the son of Joos, was very familiar with the work and style of his father and had travelled to Italy in the early 1620s.

This composition can be closely compared to that of two works, of unknown measurements, by Philippe de Momper mentioned by Ertz, the first recorded in a private collection (idem, pp. 420 and 643, cat. no. A 133*, reproduced) and the second is recorded in a Brussels private collection (idem, p. 643, cat. no. A 135*, reproduced).
