Notes

Morris entered the school at the Royal Academy in 1855 and exhibited regularly there between 1858 and 1902. He won two silver medals and in 1858 won a gold medal for The Good Samaritan. He painted both historical and biblical subjects, but later in life turned almost entirely to portraiture. Although the present work is not dated, Morris was elected an A.R.A. in 1877 and thus by the inscription it can be determined it was most likely painted after this date.
