RARE CHILDREN'S BOOK with pictures by the great modern artist Petrov-Vodkin. Combining the traditions of the icon with the principles of Cubism, he created an entirely new kind of Russian painting. He illustrated only a few picture books. The haunting pictures provide the answers to Marshak's riddles in verse. The modern text and illustrations about the phonograph, the telephone, the automobile and other everyday objects reflect contemporary life in Russia. His work fell out of favor during the years of Soviet Social Realism, but he is now considered to be one of his country's exceptional painters.
