NOTE

Petr Petrovich Sokolov studied under his father, Petr Fedorovich Sokolov, the famous watercolour portraitist.

He travelled extensively through Russia painting sharply observed genre scenes from the daily lives of peasants and landowners. The offered lot is typical of Sokolov's ability to endow these snapshots of everyday provincial activity with great charm. His talent for detail is evident from his work as a book illustrator, in particular Ivan Turgenev's Notes of a Huntsman and Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls, for which he was especially renowned.
