2υo (415 x 295 mm). Engraved title, frontispiece, 2 calligraphic dedication leaves, and 31 engraved plates by Benigno Bossi after Petitot (plate 17 with minor marginal staining). Contemporary Italian vellum, brown morocco lettering-piece on spine (old ink spotting on lower cover, corners slightly bumped). Provenance: 2nd Marquess of Bute (Luton Library bookplate, sold Christie's London, 30 October 1996, lot 129).

A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION illustrating an exceptional series of neo-classical vases after original designs by French architect and designer Petitot. Born in Lyons in 1727, Petitot studied architecture with Soufflot and by 1753 had moved to the francophile court of Parma at the request of the Marquis de Felino, to whom this work is dedicated, and become architect to the Duke. The engraver Bossi was also born in 1727, studied at Nuremberg and Dresden and lived in Parma from 1760. Berlin Kat. 1081; Millard Italian 23:2; Rothschild 256 (wrongly dating dedication "1744").
