Description

Pheasant Shooting oil on canvas 211/2 x 31 in. (54.5 x 79 cm.) NOTES The son of a diamond-cutter, Tillemans was born in Antwerp, where he studied landscape painting. He moved to England in 1708 and developed a good practice painting panoramic views of country houses for a variety of aristocratic patrons, including the Dukes of Somerset and Portland, and the Earl of Portmore. His sporting pictures included views of racing at Newmarket as well as hunting and shooting scenes. A number of his works were engraved, including a scene of the Duke of Kingston shooting in Thoresby Park.
