Notes

Peter Soreau was the son of the painter Daniel Soreau (active 1586-1619) and the twin brother of Isaac Soreau (1604-after 1638). His works show stylistic influences from compositions by Peter Binoit (active 1611-1624). Not many works by Peter Soreau have been identified but there are two similar signed pictures known: the first, a Still life with ham, sausages, onions, gurkins and birds of 1644, sold Amsterdam, Mak van Waay, 26 September 1972, lot 197 and the second, a Still life with peaches in a wan-li bowl with figs and grapes, of the same year as the present picture, 1652, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Straatsburg.

Bears a wax seal with a coat-of-arms on the reverse.
