PROVENANCE:
The Artist's Estate

Dated 1951, the present work was painted while Snow was still a student at the Slade studying Theatre design. It was also the year of his first theatre design project for 'Love's Labours Lost' directed by Rupert Doone at the Southwark Shakespeare Festival in London. Snow lived in Kennington at the time and the scene is painted from his home. The oblique angle and high view point of the painting seem to replicate the viewing position of a theatre goer. Here Snow has made the street his stage, with figures entering from the centre right and the yellow car parked expectantly in the upper left, the scene appears to be unfolding before our eyes.
