Around 1732, he went to Paris to work with Edme Bouchardon, and from 1737 until 1751 he was active in Rome, after which he was invited to London to work for Lord Doddington, on the recommendation of Cardinal Alessandro Albani. Thereafter, Verschaffelt worked as court sculptor to the Kurfurst Carl Theodor in Mannheim, for whom he executed the sculptural decorations at Castle Benrath in 1761, the same year in which he was entrusted with the renovation of the choir of St. Bavo, Ghent.
