Cette rare pendule en forme d’urne s’agrémente d’une riche ornementation de bronzes ciselés et dorés dont le modèle original est attribué au grand bronzier Robert Osmond (1713-1789), reçu Maître fondeur ciseleur en 1746. Sur un fond de marbre patiné noir, deux superbes masques de faunes en bronze finement ciselé et doré flanquent le cadran circulaire en émail blanc indiquant les heures en chiffres romains, les minutes et les quantièmes en chiffres arabes. Les anses de ce vase antique stylisé sont matérialisées par des cornes émergeant de ces visages de faunes. Elles prennent l’apparence de serpents s’enlaçant avec la plus grande souplesse pour relier le sommet de la pendule. Cette partie supérieure est couronnée d’un couvercle circulaire ceint d’un tore de lauriers centré d’un noeud de ruban à l’arrière et surmonté d’une grenade. Le piédouche est rythmé d’un décor de canaux et d’une frise de lauriers. Il repose sur une première base en bronze doré mouluré, cintrée en façade et ornée d’un motif de feuillages enrubannés. Les côtés à angles saillants sont ponctués d’une fleurette. Cette base est doublée par une seconde en marbre blanc épousant la même forme. Six pieds toupies en bronze ciselé et doré portent l’ensemble. Afin de se rapprocher au plus près de l’Antiquité, de son iconographie et de ses formes à la fois pures et sévères très en vogue vers 1770, l’artiste qui réalisa notre pendule fit le choix de prendre une urne couverte, pour en faire un objet au goût de ses contemporains. Cette forme de vase antique, alors totalement inédite pour cette époque, est due au grand maître bronzier Robert Osmond qui créa de nombreux modèles de pendules, encore très recherchés sous Louis XVI. Dès les années 1750, Osmond réalisa une première pendule en forme d’urne couverte, d’une composition et d’une ornementation assez similaires à la nôtre, les anses étant figurées par des mufles de lion qu’il livra pour le bureau de Lalive de Jully et aujourd’hui conservée au Musée Condé de Chantilly . La pendule « aux faunes » que nous présentons semble directement inspirée de cette version et connut un très grand succès avec de nombreuses variantes. Cette forme si caractéristique des chefs-d’oeuvre de Robert Osmond se retrouve par exemple dans les collections du Musée du Louvre où l’on observe une composition très approchante, notamment dans la forme de l’urne et dans le répertoire ornemental caractéristique du «goût à la grecque » (tores de lauriers, noeuds de ruban, cannelures, postes). Au-delà de ces oeuvres, certaines signées, qui nous sont parvenues, on sait assez peu de choses sur la vie de Robert Osmond. Les archives le signalent ainsi : « Osmond, Rue Mâcon, Fondeur-Acheveur en tous genres ». Il compte également parmi ses créanciers, le grand horloger Lepaute de Bellefontaine en 1779. Sans que l’on puisse réellement l’expliquer, aucun de ces modèles ne reçut de mécanisme musical malgré leurs dimensions importantes et parfois leurs côtés ajourés qui permettaient de laisser échapper les sons. Un projet dessiné de notre pendule tiré d’un recueil anonyme intitulé Livre de desseins figure dans le fonds Doucet sous le n° 143 . Hormis quelques variantes notamment au niveau des pieds, une oeuvre extrêmement proche de celle que nous présentons se trouve dans la collection Thurn and Taxis . De même, une pendule urne similaire se trouvait dans l’ancienne collection Karl Lagerfeld.
